Tonight could see a fish and chip shop in Flamborough win a national award.

Lighthouse Fisheries is hoping to lift the trophy by beating its competition in Staffordshire and Suffolk.

They are in the top 3 for the 'Best Newcomer' category which celebrates businesses that opened no earlier than January 2021, in the National Fish and Chip Awards 2023, organised and hosted by the National Federation of Fish Friers.

Gary Sharples, Manager of Lighthouse Fisheries of Flamborough, said: "It was voted for by people in the industry and to be recognised at this stage for what we've done is fantastic. It's a great boost for the team and shows what hard work they've put into it. It's come as a shock to us all but we have worked hard. We're confident in what we produce and what we serve to our customers so we're really proud of the product and the service we're giving.

"The product that we produce is fresh. It's the best ingredients that we can get. We do very little to it. It's natural and we get it out there straight to the customers cut fresh with natural produce. We know where we're sourcing the potatoes and fish from. It's all the best quality. The peas we produce in-house.

"We bought and re-fitted the premises in the Covid lockdown and then lockdown came before we got ready to open, so we opened half way into the season. We were here, we were ready and we wanted to get working so we opened up.

"Business has been fantastic. It's been a difficult time for everybody in the industry and everybody in hospitality. Prices are rising with the cost of living crisis etc but you have to up your game sometimes, make sure you're producing the best you can, hope that people recognise that and use you."

Andrew Crook, President at the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), said “The final three for Best Newcomer have now undergone three rounds of extensive judging and are well deserving of this shortlisting position. It’s been a difficult few years for the fish and chip industry, as well as the rest of the world, so it’s great to celebrate businesses who are continuing to succeed.”

The awards ceremony, hosted by NFFF, will take place at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London.
