Supermarket Chain Applies To Demolish Whitby Homes To Expand Store

A supermarket chain has applied to demolish two homes in order to expand its store in Whitby.

Lidl in Stakesby Road wants to knock down 1a and 1b Castle Road, which it owns, in order to increase the size of the store’s car park and the warehouse.

The supermarket chain has submitted its plans to Scarborough Borough Council with five local residents already objecting to the scheme.

In its application to the council the supermarket states: “The proposal includes the demolition of the existing residential units and proposed extension to the existing foodstore to accommodate larger welfare and warehouse areas and car park extension with associated external alterations”.

If the plans are improved it will lead to 20 more parking spaces and nine new parent and child spaces, a new entrance to the store and a new trolley bay.

The plans have not been welcomed by all with five objections from residents currently lodged with the borough council.

One objector wrote: “I am at a loss as to the logic of demolishing two perfectly good houses to make way for extra car parking and a small extension to a food store. Whitby is clearly in need of additional housing as such I do not agree to the demolition of two semi-detached houses which are presently inhabited.”

A number of the objectors also raise concerns about the increase in traffic in the area if the plans were to get the green light.

One resident said: “The effect of additional road traffic will add to daily pollution, noise on an already busy road.”

The plans are now out to consultation.
