A supermarket chain is set to given the green light to demolish two homes in order to expand its store in Whitby.

Lidl in Stakesby Road wants to knock down 1a and 1b Castle Road, which it owns, in order to increase the size of the store’s car park and the warehouse.

The supermarket chain submitted its plans to Scarborough Borough Council earlier this year.

Councillors on the authority’s planning committee will now meet on Thursday next week to decide on the application, with planning officers recommending approval.

Fifteen local residents have objected to the proposals, with three more writing letters in favour of Lidl’s plans.

In its application to the council the supermarket stated:

The proposal includes the demolition of the existing residential units and proposed extension to the existing foodstore to accommodate larger welfare and warehouse areas and car park extension with associated external alterations”.

If the plans are approved it will lead to 20 more parking spaces and nine new parent and child spaces, a new entrance to the store and a new trolley bay.

A number of the objectors raised concerns about the increase in traffic in the area if the plans were to get the green light, though Whitby Town Council has backed the proposals.

Scarborough Council planning officers have recommended that members grant permission for the changes when they meet next week.
