The last Caribbean serviceman who fought in World War Two stationed at Hunmanby has been talking about his experiences.

96-year-old Alford Gardner was part of the RAF team based in the village.

He said: "I'd like to meet some of them again if only I could. It was a really, really enjoyable time. I had some really lovely times. I met some lovely and beautiful people.

"When you went out every morning and did a lot of exercise, it was damn cold, but you'd march up to the hangar and had soup. There wasn't meat in it but that was the best part.

"It's very, very important to remember. A lot of people, especially young people now, don't even know that old men like me were in the war. It's nice to be remembered.

"There were boys from Jamaica, Barbados and all over. We all got on very well and it was nice for us to do our bit and be remembered."

A campaign to have a memorial plaque installed at Filey Memorial Gardens, dedicated to the Caribbean servicemen, is still on-going.
