Plans to build a KFC drive-thru near Scarborough have been approved.

It will be based in Eastfield on the site of the former Papa's Fish and Chips building, with a separate unit for a Costa Coffee.

Scarborough Borough Councillors on the planning committee had previously deferred the decision due to a number of concerns such as litter, crime and congestion.

Its Vice-Chair, John Casey, explains why he was originally against it:

"The lack of CCTV coverage on the proposed development and also an increase in anti-social behaviour; because establishments like fast food and drive-thru places do attract the sort of person who's likely to cause anti-social behaviour and noise.

After the initial meeting, the decision was deferred because there were so many points of concerns raised.

So the planning officers went back to the applicant and the police to address these concerns.

There's now six CCTV cameras on each of the two proposed new buildings.

There's an area management plan in place to deal with anti-social behaviour, that's done in conjunction with the police and there's been an increase in litter bins in the vicinity including McDonald's."
