Humberside urged to take action against violence of women and girls

People in the Humberside area are being urged to take action and get involved in tackling violence against women and girls.
It is after a meeting of a partnership last Thursday with females, Humberside Police, charities, organisations and more in attendance.
One of those was Stacey McEvoy, who is also from Preston Road Women's Centre, she said: "It needs to be a focus on how do we educate men to not engage in violence against women and girls. How do we educate our boys? How do we engage with businesses and the private sector?
"This is a problem that affects all throughout society. This isn't a problem for the police, it's not something that women and girls need to take on board and that we should be driving. This is something that everybody really needs to take ownership of and get involved.
"The street lighting, increasing CCTV and having safe spaces in public spaces is absolutely vital and important however, that doesn't make up the bulk of violence against women and girls, quite often it's happening behind closed doors, workplaces, schools, universities and it's happening in their own home.
"We need to start challenging businesses and make it a mandatory part of their policy and put pressure on schools to teach this in their curriculum. It can't just be about addressing street lighting, that's very important but there's a much, much wider issue here about violence against women and girls.
"I think one of the big problems that we face is in our society, we associate value with money and we need to have a shift from that. We need to re-address the balance because actually human lives are more valuable than money and we need to start focussing on that and until we do, we're going to continue having this problem.
