An event takes place this evening to plan more action on making women across the Humberside area safer.

The Violence Against Women and Girls Partnership meeting includes women in the community, police, councils and others.

It is an issue that has seen a lot of coverage recently in the light of murders including that of Sarah Everard.

PC Carl Osler, community cohesion officer for the East Riding at Humberside Police, said: "I think during 2021 there's been a real passion about this issue of violence against women and girls. It's not something that's appeared out of nowhere, it's been here for some time but I think there's definitely been a lot of momentum this year. We've had reclaim these streets which is quite a relevant organisation.

"The police themselves can't deal with issue, we really do need the support from our partner agencies but before we can have that dialogue, we really need to understand what the concerns are from residents, from females. By setting up this partnership meeting it gives residents the chance to really have a voice for their community."

PC Osler describes some of things they are looking at:

"Better lighting in dark areas, some of the females I've spoken to talk about being safe when they go out on a night, knowing that staff can identify and support women should there be an issue. Certainly over the last couple of weeks, there's been a heightened concern about spiking.

"This is a really progressive partnership and I think the more discussion we can have with women and girls from all backgrounds, the better service and support mechanisms we can put in place by working with our partner agencies."
