Humberside Fire and Rescue is urging people to stay away from tidal rivers, docks and marinas in places like Bridlington, Grimsby and Hull.

With a red weather warning for extreme heat about to hit parts of the East Riding, we are being warned about the dangers of open water.

Jonathan Clark is the water safety lead for the service and said: "Young people are losing their lives and those places seem to be where they are congregating the most. These are dangerous places, they are hidden dangers under the surface and the quality of the water isn't particularly pleasant.

"The difference in air temperature and water temperature is so massive that the shock on the body, the heart and the breathing is so extreme that even after a few seconds the body can start to panic. What can turn out to be a simple little dip can sadly turn to tragedy.

"It's not just Lancashire, West Yorkshire and Wales that we hear about on the national news, this is happening close to home. We certainly want to avoid call-outs in the sense that it will mean people have taken on the message and people have stayed safe over the hot weekend."
