Calls for national day of remembrance by Humberside Fire Brigades Union
There's been over 2,300 deaths recorded by the Firefighters' Memorial Trust
Humberside Fire Brigade Union are calling for MPs to get behind their proposals to make a national day of remembrance.
With over 2,300 deaths recorded by the Firefighters' Memorial Trust, the Memorial Day falls on the 4th of May every year.
To mark the day minute silences are set to take place on forecourts of fire stations across the country.
Gavin Marshall, who is from the Humberside Fire Brigade Union, said: "It is the ultimate sacrifice to lose your life in the line of duty and those that have made that sacrifice, it's important we don't forget that. It's important for firefighters to not forget that, the serious nature behind their job, and it's also important that the communities don't forget that we are there for that ultimate sacrifice should it be needed.
"We do a red plaque and we have one being processed at the moment for a firefighter in Humberside who lost his life at Goole Fire Station and we're also in the process of getting a second one. We are as a Fire Brigades Union recognising those people that have made the ultimate sacrifice.
"At present we're trying to take that one step further by trying to get MPs to recognise this day, and we've got an early motion in where we're calling our local MPs to support this so it's debated and potentially a day of remembrance for all firefighters who have made that ultimate sacrifice."
