Yorkshire Coast charity marks World Suicide Prevention Day
Mental health charity Hull and East Yorkshire Mind is reminding people of the support available
Mental health charity Hull and East Yorkshire Mind is marking World Suicide Prevention Day today (Friday 10th September) by reminding people about their support available in the local area.
World Suicide Prevention Day, which takes place annually, is all about organisations and individuals coming together to create a world where fewer people die by suicide.
According to the Office for National Statistics, 5,691 suicides were registered in England and Wales in 2019, which amounts to around one death by suicide every 90 minutes. Yorkshire and Humber have the highest rates of suicide in the country for men and women.
The charity wants to remind people about the support they offer as part of their Together Service. The service, which was launched in 2020, offers tailored support to individuals who have been bereaved or affected by suicide. Support is available to people of any age living in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, North East Lincolnshire and North Lincolnshire. There are no age limits, and support is offered by trained volunteers with their own experience of losing someone to suicide.
Emma Dallimore, Chief Executive at Hull and East Yorkshire Mind and North East Lincolnshire Mind said:
“World Suicide Prevention Day is a great opportunity for us to come together and create a world where fewer people die by suicide. Unfortunately suicide is not rare, but it is preventable. There are things we can all do to help prevent suicide in our local communities.
Talking about the problem of suicide is still seen as a difficult subject, and yet talking can make a huge difference. Many people in our area are affected by suicide- they may have lost a loved one, considered it themselves, or know someone who struggles with thoughts of suicide.
As an organisation, we continue to work around the clock to ensure that people have access to the right help, when they need it most. Our experienced team are here to help you to recover, and stay well. ”
Social media campaign and community search survey launch
The charity will also launching a social media campaign, and a community research survey, to help raise awareness. The campaign can be followed using @MindHEY.
The survey, which is open to children and young people aged 14+, as well as adults, will form part of the research to develop a new suicide prevention service available to individuals living across Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire and North East Lincolnshire.

Emma added:
“The individuals within our communities are at the heart of everything that we do at Hull and East Yorkshire Mind. We are launching this new community research survey to really understand what it is that local people need, and want to see from local mental health services.
"We want to encourage as many people as possible from our local area to complete the survey. By completing it, you are enabling your voice to be heard, and mental health support to be shaped around you. The results from the survey will be the driving force on how this service is set up to support local people, when they need it most.“
Due to the sensitive nature of the topic, you may find some of the questions distressing. There is support available if you do feel upset or distressed and contact details are provided at the end of the survey. The survey is completely confidential.
The results from the survey will be shared in Winter 2021.
