The number of new coronavirus cases has risen in Hull and the East Riding by around half in a week, according to the latest figures.

Government figures show 265 new coronavirus cases were recorded in Hull in the seven days up to Sunday, October 1, up 88 cases or 49.7 per cent in a week.

The number of infections in the East Riding rose to 426, up 147 or 52.7 per cent during the same period.

Figures also showed the case rate per 100,000 people in Hull reached 102.3, up from 68.3 and 124.1 in the East Riding, rising from 81.3.

It comes local public health officials called on people to brace for rising coronavirus cases last week.

Dr James Crick, consultant in Public Health Medicine for Hull City Council, said people should remember that coronavirus has not gone away and cases would rise this winter.

East Riding Council’s Public Health Director Andy Kingdom said rising coronavirus and flu cases coinciding with the cost of living crisis could create a perfect storm for the health system.

He added around one in 50 people in the East Riding could have coronavirus and called on people to consider wearing masks and to get a booster vaccine if eligible.

A total of 98 coronavirus patients were in Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital as of this morning (Monday, October 10), with six in intensive care.
