Hopes for decent season this year for Scarborough South Bay businesses
The Chairman of the South Bay Traders Association in Scarborough is hoping that businesses will be able to enjoy a decent season this year.
It is hoped businesses on Scarborough's South Bay will be able to enjoy a decent season this year.
The Chairman of the Traders' Association says times are hard for everyone at the moment and will be till April.
John Senior says if things go well with the vaccines and the number of coronavirus cases drops then more people will come to the town, but everyone has a part ot play.
He said:
"It is vitally important that people stay safe and stay at home and abide by the rules. If they do that, and we get through the next two months, as we expect to, then hopefully will begin to open up towards Easter time and then spring will open up a little more as the weather improves.
"I think specifically for those businesses that enjoy the benefit of being near the beach, the harbour and the sea, we had a reasonable summer and it was enough to get us through the winter; that does not speak for the businesses up in the town centre or in cities across the United Kingdom.
"People are more reticent about going out over the Christmas period to places like Scarborough and enjoying the normal festivities that we have down on the seafront. So it was relatively quiet along the whole of the holiday period but I think that was actually a good thing.
John says that is vital to come out of restrictions as soon as possible:
"When we're ready, it'll start to happen but if we get it wrong and we have to put the brakes on again, then that is bad for businesses. We don't want to have that situation either. It's not good for people, it's not good for the mental health of the British people."
