People planning holidays in North Yorkshire are being urged to take regular lateral flow tests.

The region's local resilience forum says they're anticipating more travel in and out of the area over the Summer.

It's as infection rates continue to rise locally, with many areas seeing higher rates per 100,000 people than the national average.

Local public health consultant Doctor Victoria Turner said: "We've seen in the last few weeks several incidents where asymptomatic LFT testing has acted as early warnings for cases and settings for young people.

"Getting as many people as possible to keep up with that testing is vital to keeping those younger people safe.

"We've heard anecdotally from NHS colleagues this week that they're seeing people with Covid who either didn't test - because they assumed their symptoms wouldn't be Covid - or just did an LFT test that was negative; they carried out their daily business going to work and other players - exposing infections unnecessarily to other people.

"We've also picked up from test and trace that people have been travelling into North Yorkshire to visit when they know they're feeling unwell, but there's sometimes been a delay of several days between symptoms starting and getting tested.

"As we move into Summer more people are likely to be travelling across the county and the UK for day trips and holidays.

"We do encourage people with no symptoms to do regular LFT testing before you go away or meet with friends and family.

"Similarly if you're due to travel and feel unwell, even if it's only mild symptoms please take it seriously and take a PCR test".
