Staff at gyms in Scarborough are having specialist training this January aimed at raising awareness about cervical cancer.

Organised by the Humber and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance, the sessions are designed to empower staff to speak confidently with customers about the importance of screening and recognising symptoms, especially in areas with lower screening attendance rates.

Preventable cases

Health experts say these everyday conversations could help save lives, as nearly all cases of cervical cancer are preventable through regular screening and early detection.

The training sessions come as part of efforts to ensure cervical cancer awareness is integrated into familiar community settings.

A broader reach

By delivering training to staff at popular leisure locations, the Cancer Alliance aims to make discussions about cervical cancer screenings and health more accessible.

While screening programmes provide critical prevention efforts, health leaders emphasise that raising awareness in informal settings can complement these initiatives and encourage more people to attend their appointments.

The Cancer Alliance hopes these efforts can increase cervical cancer screening uptake, leading to earlier detection and treatment that could significantly improve survival rates.

Support for raising awareness extends to the wider community, with staff encouraged to use their newly gained knowledge to promote better understanding among gym-goers and leisure centre visitors alike.
