A North Yorkshire alcohol and drug misuse support charity is expanding its service.

Generis is partnering up with Hull and East Yorkshire Mind to help reduce suicide risk.

The aim is to offer training for substance misuse to help professionals spot the early signs of drug and alcoholism.

Laura Jarvis, senior manager at Generis, said: "There's been issues for a long time if you throw the pandemic in there then people's mental health coming out of that has been quite poor. People's substance use has increased massively during that time so I think we're at a pinacle point now where people are struggling.

"This training is aimed predominately at health and care professionals and really the aim is to provide people with the confidence and the knowledge around substance use and suicide, so how to start asking the question.

"When you think about bringing the two subjects together, there was a distinctive lack of any training in the two subjects and bringing those together and the link. We've done some research, we've put together a training package and actually were really support by the Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership suicide prevention programme."
