Scarborough Council has approved further changes to a former dance centre that was converted into four apartments.

A former Whitby dance centre that was permitted to be converted into residential accommodation has been granted further changes by the local planning authority.

The two-storey building located in Whitby’s conservation area at The Mount on Cliff Street is being converted into four dwellings with en-suite bathrooms.

Before the conversion was approved last year, the planned changes received objections from Whitby Civic Society and members of the public citing concerns about parking and rubbish collection.

Further changes to the exterior of the building, which consists of traditional stonework, have been approved by Scarborough Council. The application was submitted by Mr C. Middleton.

The latest application sought to amend the fenestration of three windows in the west-facing elevation of the building, resulting in larger window openings.

According to the council, the three larger openings would accommodate fire escape windows in response to building regulations.

The new proposal also sought consent for the erection of a steel railing along the west-facing elevation separating the site from the public highway.

No objections to the amended plans were raised by Whitby Town Council or North Yorkshire Highway Authority and no comments were received from members of the public.

According to the planning authority, the proposal would be in keeping with the surrounding area, and would not detract from the appearance of the host building.

According to a council report, there have been several amendment submissions following the original approval for conversion into housing, some of which have been determined, while others remain under consideration.

The changes were approved by Scarborough Council on Thursday 20 October subject to various conditions.

One of the conditions imposed by the council states that before the commencement of any works to the exterior of the building, details of the design and appearance of the refuse storage facility must be submitted to and approved in writing by the local planning authority.
