FULL GUIDE: Armed Forces Day National Event in Scarborough

Today is the Armed Forces Day National Event in Scarborough.

It starts at 10am and finishes at around 5.30pm on the South Bay. There will be appearances from members of the Royal Family, politicians and more. There will be displays via land, sea and air.

As many as 100,000 visitors, current and former military personnel and cadets will be in Scarborough, as the nation says ‘thanks’ for the work of our armed forces and the wider defence community.

Getting to and from the event

Greatest Hits Radio is an official media partner and on its Yorkshire Coast station, it will be providing live traffic and travel updates on the day online, on DAB or on 96.2FM. Today, information will be given live from the car parks to broadcast on the regular traffic bulletins.

On foot

All veterans will be able to use the Central Tramway free of charge.

Car

There will be a number of road closures in place that could impact the traffic flow around Scarborough Town Centre. Using a park and ride where possible is recommended.

Arriving from the North

If travelling from the north of the country, then take the A171 from Middlesbrough via Guisborough and Whitby to arrive in Scarborough. Traffic arriving from along the A171 from Whitby direction will be able to drive and park on to part of the Royal Albert Drive but there will be no through route or access beyond Albert Road.

Motorists will be advised in advance of the closures of Marine Drive, Royal Albert Drive, Foreshore Road and Sandside and will be directed to the main arterial routes A64 – York, A165 – Bridlington and Hull.

Arriving from the South

Traffic arriving from the south along the A165 from Bridlington/Hull direction will be advised in advance of the closures of Marine Drive, Royal Albert Drive, Foreshore Road and Sandside and will be directed to the main arterial routes A64 – York, A170 – Whitby.

Arriving from the West

Traffic arriving from the west will be able to do so via the A170 from Thirsk passing through Helmsley, Pickering, and Thornton Dale before arriving into the town centre via Falsgrave.

Park and Ride

There are three park and ride sites operating in Scarborough on Armed Forces Day that will allow you to park up and get a bus into the centre of town.

North Yorkshire County Council will be operating sites in Filey Road and Seamer Road.

A new, FREE temporary park and ride site will be opened on the day at playing fields between St Leonard’s Crescent and the old Scarborough to Whitby railway track, off Barrowcliff Road (Postcode for sat navs – YO12 6SR)

It will provide space for approximately 2,000 cars with buses to take people down to the seafront (Royal Albert Drive/Albert Road) operated by East Yorkshire Buses. It will then be an approximately 15 minute walk to the event.

The park and ride will be open between 9am and 8pm and will be signposted from Scalby Road.

Buses will run from Maple Drive every 15 minutes from 9am until 7.45pm with return buses leaving from Royal Albert Drive every 15 minutes from 9.20am until 8pm.

Arriva buses between Scarborough and Middlesbrough via Whitby and Guisborough

Coastliner buses to and from Scarborough, Whitby and Filey via Malton, York and Leeds

East Yorkshire Busses between Scarborough and Hull via Filey, Bridlington, Driffield and Beverley

Train

Due to planned industrial action today (Saturday 25th June) there will be no trains running in or out of Scarborough on the day.
