Fly-Tipping Fines Issued Doubled In Scarborough Borough

The number of fly-tipping fines issued by Scarborough Council was more than double that of the previous year, the authority has revealed.

The borough council has called the illegal dumping rubbish a “scourge” on the local environment and says it has stepped up enforcement.

In a report to go before Monday’s full council meeting, Cllr Tony Randerson, cabinet member for Neighbourhoods, outlines the issues faced during the lockdown, for the majority of which Scarborough’s household waste recycling centres were closed.

Cllr Randerson wrote:

"Fly-tipping is a scourge on our local environment and our Officers will take all possible steps to ensure that perpetrators are caught and prosecuted.

“As such, we have stepped up our efforts to tackle this issue and our enforcement team have now issued 24 fixed penalty notices since April which is more than double than the same time last year.”

Recycling centres run by North Yorkshire County Council were reopened in May after closing in March at the beginning of the pandemic.
