A new floodlit unfenced concrete skate park is coming to Filey.

It will cost just over £362,000 from Scarborough Borough Council, Filey Town Council, North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner's Community Fund and the sale of Southdene grass tennis courts.

The facility will be next to the multi-use games area that already exists on West Avenue car park.

Mike Cockerill, who is a Scarborough Borough Councillor and Filey Town Councillor, said: "No. I won't be using it. I will look at it and how it's being used everytime I go up to the golf course.

"There has been skate parks in the past but they've not been of concrete construction like this one's going to be, so they haven't lasted and they've been removed for various reasons. At least this one will be more difficult to remove but it's very welcome and we've been working towards it for quite a few years.

"The previous skate parks were very well used. I mean you only have to look at Hairy Bob's in Scarborough and how that's used. The youngsters of Filey and the area around Filey will say 'we want that' and now they're going to get it.

"It's taken a long time to get there. I think the idea is that it will be contructed in time for next year and I'd just encouraged everybody, young or old, to go and use it, get the full benefit from it and enjoy it."
