Filey memorial plaque unveiled to remember Caribbean WW2 servicemen
Hundreds of people turned up to witness the event
Filey has welcomed hundreds of people from across Yorkshire to remember World War Two servicemen from the Caribbean.
A memorial plaque was unveiled and the last remaining veterans themselves turned up too.
96-year-old Alford Gardner is one of them and said: "The main thing I remember about Filey was that it was cold. The plaque is very nice and it's about time something was done. It's taken a long time. The only thing I ever wanted to do when I was a little boy was to be a doctor and as a grew up I had an opportunity to study here but other things took over."
Faith Tankard turned up to show her support. Her dad Lionel Roker also served in the war based at RAF Hunmanby. She said: "I think it's really important for people to realise that there were a lot of black people from the Caribbean who came and answered the call to support their mother country. They have a lot of agency and it's important for us as second and third generation black people in this country to be here to support their memory and honour them.
"He enjoyed his time in Filey and found the local people very welcoming, very supportive and they were very aware that they had answered the call to come and help fight. They all just rubbed along together and they were there to help fight the war.
"It's really wonderful and heartwarming to realise that even though my father passed away a couple of years ago, it's really important and humbling that his memory and the memory of all those other servicemen is remembered and the love and respect for them is still here.
"I think it's important when people do walk around not to just see the plaque when there are things you don't know and understand, do your research and have a look at see what's happened because there are so many other things about the history of black people within this country that so many people don't know. I think they'll find it enlightening and really interesting.
"When we were growing up we would come to Filey quite often. We always knew about this place and we knew this was where he was. He had very fond memories of it and we still have fond memories because of him. It feels very nice to be here in his memory."
