Filey's Flood Alleviation Scheme is nearly finished.

That is according to Mike Cockerill, Town and Scarborough Borough Councillor.

The project to build a moat around it to collect excess rain water has been around for nearly 20 years.

Mike said:

"The vast majority of the work on the flood alleviation scheme is complete. The work that's going on at the moment is mainly to do with the environmental enhancements, creating some footpaths around and it's going to create quite a nice walk all the way around Filey.

"The latest information that I've got is that the whole scheme, both to the north and south of Filey, would be finished in July. Some parts should be finished before that, but overall that's what I'm told.

"The work's been solely on the site so it hasn't created any disruption to anybody apart from obviously some noise and during that really hot weather a few weeks ago, there were a lot of dust clouds while they were moving around with heavy wagons.

"Residents are over the moon that it's already proved its worth. If the vast majority of the work hadn't been completed before Christmas, it's likely that many properties could have been flooded so it's already showing the benefits."
