The drive-through coronavirus testing centre will be making an additional visit to Whitby today, as the north of the borough finds itself at the centre of an outbreak.

On Friday, the borough was named as an 'Area of Concern' by Public Health England, due to a spike in cases, with the area around Whitby singled out as one of the worst impacted areas.

The drive-through facility will be at Whitby’s park and ride facility on Guisborough Road today, for anyone with symptoms to get tested.

Today’s visit will not impact on the facility’s regularly scheduled availability in the town on Thursday, which will take place as usual.

Scarborough will also get a visit from the testing facility on Wednesday, at the Seamer Road park and ride site.

The testing has been organised by the Department of Health and Social Care which has warned people to not just turn up but make an appointment first.

There are two ways to do this depending on which testing group you are part of.

Anyone who is showing coronavirus symptoms should register for a test on the NHS website at www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/

People who do not have access to the internet, or who have difficulty with the digital portals, can ring the 119 service to book.

Key workers and members of their household should register for a test on the government website.

Tests can be booked at www.gov.uk/apply-coronavirus-test-essential-workers.

Six new coronavirus case were been recorded across the borough over the weekend, bringing the area’s total since the start of the pandemic to 677..

The data includes tests carried out in hospitals and also Pillar 2 tests, which is anyone tested at one of the mobile sites in the borough, or sent a test to take at home.
