People in Scarborough encouraged to shop local to support businesses
A new coffee and pop-up shop has started called 'Explore Indie'
People in Scarborough are being encouraged to shop local on the high street to support businesses.
A new initiative has started called 'Explore Indie', which aims to help with post-lockdown recovery, boost the economy and to create jobs.
It is a not-for-profit coffee and pop-up shop on St. Nicholas Street and around 30 independent businesses are already involved.
It has been set up by Yorkshire in Business and Director Jennifer Crowther said:
“The town and its businesses needed to start rebuilding as a community and a fresh shop local initiative is what will really boost the town spirits. I hope to involve as many local businesses as we can, providing them with a space to launch or grow and I am excited to look at future developments for the Explore Indie initiative that can involve all the other amazing independent businesses in our town.
"Shopping at Explore indie is a way that the community can support multiple local businesses under one roof with over 30 independents already involved. The shop is also providing employment and training opportunities for young people to enable them to gain sustainable employment within the town and nurture skills and talents to turn a hobby into a business."
Deborah Day of Cafe Seven York Place, runs the Coffee shop Grind operating within the premises and said:
"We wanted to get involved in this new collaboration as a way that café Seven can give back. There is a buzz Iv not seen in the town before and it really has provided a fresh new approach for our local Shoppers to enjoy our town."
Alisha Berry, Owner at The House of Scents, makes her own bath products and Sizzlers, was one of the first businesses to get involved, she said:
"It’s a brilliant opportunity for businesses, iv been able to direct my customers to the shop and have built a new client base from having this as my business home."
If any business would like to showcase their products within the Explore Indie shop, email jenn@yorkshireinbusiness.org.uk or call into the shop.
