The Headmaster of Scarborough College says it has been an emotional and special return as all their pupils were able to return back to school earlier this week.
Guy Emmett, Headmaster of Scarborough College, said:
"We are delighted to see all the pupils return and we want to make sure their return to school is a happy one. In the media I read about catch-up plans and making up for lost time but I disagree with that kind of thinking. Children have worked incredibly hard academically during lockdown and they have excelled. They need to enjoy coming to school again and we need to look at what makes face-to-face education special.
"We want to go outside. We want to play sports, enjoy the school orchestra, have Geography lessons at Cayton Bay, resume working on the vegetable patch and enjoy education that is not merely confined to a screen. All of us, we have been stuck in our houses and in front of a computer. Where we can, we return to lessons without a Chromebook."
Guy says the College's decision to focus on getting its pupils out of the classroom is relatively easy from a practical point of view. He says the decision to focus on child well-being and the holistic aspect of education is perhaps not what people might have expected but he is confident that this is the correct decision.
Guy added:
"On Monday morning children saw their friends for the first time in months. Seeing their faces from aged three to 18 emphasised how a school is about people and relationships whilst ensuring a love of learning and adventure."
