A 'food hub' in Eastfield is set to develop further by providing community activities revolving around cooking.

Carers Plus Yorkshire, which is based in Scarborough, has applied for £55,000.

It is to expand its venture at the old cafe premises on 120 Westway in Eastfield for around two years to help prevent isolation and loneliness.

Claire Robinson, the charity's deputy chief officer. said: "Whilst we're not going to be opening it up as a cafe, what we are going to be doing is lots of different sessions for lots of different audiences all related somehow to food. It could be we'll have general drop-ins where there's tea and toast for people to enjoy or it could be there's more structured stuff.

"There's lots of places in Eastfield around where the cafe is, or where the former cafe was, so Westway Open Arms, The Legacy, the library and it just felt that that building would complete the sort of set of things that would be available. There's lots of people in Eastfield who are always looking for something different to engage with.

"There's a huge sense of community that could be undersatisfied at the moment and we hope that by working with those other partners and opening yet another hub opportunity, we're giving people more choice so they can choose to come and hopefully somebody will be able to go to one on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday etc and nobody would ever be lonely or isolated again.

"Food and fuel poverty with the cost of living actually hits every home now. It's not just hitting those people who may have the lowest income coming into their homes. I think the more opportunity we have to share and celebrate food opportunities, just coming together and having a coffee and something that's a warm space then that's just so important."
