East Riding health walks return
Health Walks in the East Riding has been re-launched and the team are encouraging people to get out and about.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s programme of Health Walks has been re-launched in line with government guidelines to encourage people to get out and about and enjoy the natural beauty of the area, whilst staying fit and healthy.
Walks are short and over easy terrain and are open to everyone, but are especially aimed at those who are least active.
There are 22 different walk locations, offering a variety of lengths, supported by a team of friendly, specially trained volunteers who are on hand to provide encouragement and support, and make sure no one gets left behind.
The authority says many walkers start walking to improve their health but find it easy to keep coming back because of all the new friends they have made. As well as all the physical health benefits, walking for health is also excellent for your social life.
Councillor Kerri Harold, portfolio holder for Public Health and Tackling Inequalities, said:
“Walking really is one of the most perfect forms of exercise there is – physically, it tones your body, strengthens your muscles and keeps your heart healthy. But it’s crucial for our mental health too. Going out for a daily walk can help reduce tension, stress and anxiety, which is an issue for so many of us, especially after the year we have all had!”
Laura Hutchinson, Health Lifestyles Development Officer, added:
“Walking at a brisk pace for as little as ten minutes per day can lead to massive health benefits by lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardio vascular disease, dementia and some cancers. Joining our walks provides a safe environment for everyone to enjoy walking and exploring our natural environment.”
East Riding Health Walks welcome new walkers throughout the year. Over 70 walks take place each month, starting from a variety of locations around the East Riding of Yorkshire.
