East Riding businesses with food hygiene rating of one
There are currently 24 that require major improvements to meet standards
There are currently 24 East Riding takeaways, restaurants and other eateries with a food hygiene rating of one, meaning they require major improvements to meet standards.
The Food Standard Agency’s (FSA) ratings of the East Riding businesses are based on the results from their most recent inspections.
The FSA grades venues on a scale of zero to five, with the former denoting the worst possible hygiene standards and the latter the best.
Venues rated zero require urgent improvements to their standards, while those rated one need major work to be better.
Those rated two are deemed to require some improvements while venues with a score of three have generally satisfactory hygiene standards.
Businesses given a score of four have good hygiene standards while those scored five are deemed very good.
Council inspectors judge venues based on how they handle food, how it is stored and prepared, the cleanliness of facilities and how they manage safety.
Inspections do not cover the quality of food, customer service, culinary skill, presentation or comfort.
Council food safety officers have several powers at their disposal to ensure businesses improve their standards and can give advice and guidance to them.
It is up to the local authority official to tell the business how quickly improvements must be made.
Officers can shut part or all of a business down if its hygiene standards are found to be so poor that they pose an imminent risk to public health.
Venues which require inspections include restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways, canteens, hotels, supermarkets and other food shops, schools, hospitals and care homes.
Businesses exempt from inspections are those deemed to be a low risk to public health such as newsagents, chemists or traders offering care services at home.
The frequency of inspections at venues depends on their potential risk to public health.
Potential risk is assessed according to the type of food handled, the number and type of customers, the way food is processed and hygiene standards seen in the previous inspection.
Of the East Riding venues with a rating of one, 10 are in Bridlington, two in the Brough area and five are in and around Driffield.
Three are in Goole and there is one each in Hornsea, Market Weighton, North Ferriby and Pocklington.
One East Riding venue also had a food hygiene rating of zero, Nisa, in Main Road, Burton Pidsea, Holderness.
