Scarborough has recorded its second day of more than 100 new coronavirus cases.

After 104 new infections were confirmed on Saturday, a further 103 were added yesterday (Monday).

Scarborough’s infection rate, which last month was the lowest in North Yorkshire at 92, now stands at 402 cases per 100,000 population on a seven-day average.

It has overtaken every other North Yorkshire district and also the average for England, which is now 239.

The borough’s overall total number of cases since the start of the pandemic is now 1,871 and Scarborough is now averaging 62 new cases per day in the last week, 437 in total in the past seven days.

Data released by the government, which dates up until November 4, shows three areas in the borough with an above-average infection rate.

Filey and Hunmanby recorded 51 cases in the previous seven days, until November 4, giving it an infection rate of 440.

Whitby West had 50 cases and infection rate of 719 and Whitby South & East had 28 cases and a rate of 453.

Newby & Scalby also recorded an elevated infection rate of 381 and 35 cases.

Last week, Scarborough’s new walk-in coronavirus testing site officially opened at the William Street Coach Park.

Testing at the site is available seven days a week from 8am until 8pm and it will have the capacity for around 350 tests per day.

Appointments must be booked in advance.
