Coronavirus Testing Fiasco 'Unacceptable' Admits Filey MP
Kevin Hollinrake says the government should have foreseen the demand for tests.
The MP for Filey admits the government has made mistakes over coronavirus tests.
It's after reports of people having to travel long distances to try to get one - as supplies in many areas run out.
Kevin Hollinrake says we've got the highest testing rate per capita of the population of anywhere in Europe.
But he says what's happening now isn't right.
Kevin said:
"It's not acceptable. My postbag is full of people who need a test and can't get one. It's absolutely wrong and we should apologise for the fact that we haven't foreseen this problem.
We should have seen the capacity requirements and increased the number of tests earlier. That's what's happening now. we're doing about 250,000 tests a day. The Prime Minister wants to do 500,000 a day by the end of October, which is a phenomenal number and we'll get there, but it does take time."
It comes as agencies in North Yorkshire have declared a 'major incident' after a surge in the number of cases in the county.
The Council, NHS and emergency services are asking residents are being asked to be extra careful.
Scarborough borough has seen eight new infections in 24 hours.
