Unlicensed waste collectors getting work by posting or responding to online adverts is an “issue” for the East Riding, the council has said.

An East Riding Council spokesperson said several residents had been prosecuted or handed fines after hiring such waste collectors online, including on social media.

The spokesperson added many cases of residents hiring unlicensed waste collectors online led to fly tipping in the county.

The council spokesperson said: “Unlicensed waste carriers advertising or responding to adverts on social media is an ongoing issue.

“In a number of fly tipping cases in recent years initial contact between unlicensed carriers and residents has been made via social media.

“Several of these cases have seen residents prosecuted or issued with fixed penalties for failing to check that their waste was being correctly disposed of.

“The number of fly-tips reported between April and August has remained at a similar level to last year, with the council’s enforcement officers continuing to investigate incidents throughout that period.”

Residents are required to check if a waste collector is licensed before hiring them, or else face penalties.
