Campaigners to meet North Yorkshire Council about future of Alpamare
The Waterpark has been closed since October
Campaigners say they're desperate for some good news about the future of the Alpamare Waterpark on the Yorkshire Coast.
It closed last year - and the old operator went into administration.
But the Council is now running it with hopes it could reopen by the Summer.
Sarah Forsyth is one of the campaigners and says they're hoping for an update at a meeting this morning: "We feel quite strongly that the Council should run the pool because it’s been run now by two sets of companies. It’s been extortionate some of the costs, you know I'm fortunate and I work and I can afford to go, but I know a lot of people can’t because it is so expensive if you try to take your family there."
"Our aim is to get that pool open as soon as possible, we want to be back in there. The outside pools were lovely, you know, when it’s like this, it’s the perfect time to go because you feel like you’re on holiday when you spent an hour there."
She also says it was really good at helping reduce social isolation: "From young Mums who would drop the kids off and come along, to people who are retired, you would have your 45 minute aquafit and then you go get your coffee that was included in the aquafit and go and sit in the pool and it was perfect."
What have the Council said so far?
In a statement released in December the Council announced: "'North Yorkshire Council has taken possession of the Alpamare waterpark in Scarborough.
Contractors working for the authority will now undertake assessments and ensure the site is safe before options are explored to consider the future operation of the attraction. The facility features indoor and outdoor pools, waterslides and a spa.
The tenant of the North Bay attraction, Benchmark Leisure Ltd, went into administration in October this year.'
North Yorkshire Council’s assistant director for commercial, property and procurement, Kerry Metcalfe, said: “I can confirm we have taken possession of the former Alpamare waterpark in Scarborough.
“We are committed to ensuring that all the necessary assessments and work is undertaken in a thorough and professional manner and that we consider all options for the future operation of the site.
“Through this, it is hoped that measures will be in place to open the facility in time for the main 2024 summer season.'
