There is a call for people in Bridlington and the East Riding not to become 'complacent' when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic.

That is the message from the county's Director of Public Health.

Andy Kingdom has been speaking to us ahead of the relaxation of lockdown rules next week.

As of next Monday (29th March), you will be able to meet outdoors in a group of six.

He said:

"We're not out of the woods yet. We can see the way out. The vaccine is doing amazing things in bringing numbers down, saving lives and stopping transmission and that's in our favour, but we still have a very highly transmissible virus out there.

"There's still 112,000 people who haven't been vaccinated yet so plenty of roots for the virus to get to the most vulnerable, and we still have something like 60-odd people in our local hospital. So the message would be unfortunately we need to stick to the basics. If we don't and we are complacent, we will just increase the infection numbers.

"Hands, face, space, get tested when you're worried about it, isolate when you've had the results and then get the vaccine when you can. If we just do the basics, we'll be OK and we can get out of the woods but at the moment, there's still a highly transmissible virus and 112,000 people who could still be infected.

"People just need to stick to the basics. If they do the rule of six and they take it step-by-step then we can get to a place where people can meet up much more safely but at the moment, we need to take it a step at the time. The virus is still out there and that rule of six will turn into seven or eight and then people will go into each other's houses and that's where the transmission happens."
