The Leader of Scarborough Borough Council is welcoming the next step of the roadmap out of lockdown.

From today, non-essential businesses can re-open - with some hospitality being able to serve customers outside.

Steve Siddons said:

"Everything moving in that direction is going to help the economy. We've all gone through a really difficult 12 months and businesses have really struggled and have continued to struggle. I think anything that the Government can do to safely relax the restrictions is to be welcomed.

"We have to remember that the virus is still there so it's not a question of 'everything is back to normal' because it's not, but these small steps in the right direction are welcome and we look forward to having a really good summer here on the coast and hope people remain safe and enjoy themselves.

"The likelihood is that we will see more visitors this summer. I think we expect there to be a bumper year especially if the weather is kind to us. We'll look forward to welcoming visitors throughout the summer provided that they look after us as well and they stay safe, keep their distance and take their litter home."
