Bridlington RNLI is set to honour a committed supporter of the charity today.

A lifeboat naming ceremony will take place in memory of Ernie Wellings at 3pm.

The public are being invited to attend and to watch the D-Class launch afterwards.

The boat will be accepted by Bridlington Lifeboat Station and Reverend Matthew Pollard will lead the service of dedication before the boat is officially named 'Ernie Wellings' by a member of his family.

Steve Clarke, Lifeboat Operation Manager at Bridlington RNLI, said: "He was a committed support of the RNLI. He was a big fan of cricket, he loved collecting books and he loved classic music. He had a huge collection of CDs, he enjoyed gardening and his own vegetables. He had an excellent sense of humour I'm led to believe as well. He made a very kind donation to the RNLI.

"The whole RNLI is based on volunteers giving up their time and putting themselves at high risk sometimes to save lives, so any support and help is a great boon because it provides us with top rate equipment which enables us to launch safely.

"We're celebrating a typical scenario and the naming ceremony is something that we would enjoy support from the public. We're opening the doors and certainly we welcome any visitors to the station to engage with us and there'll be plenty of crew around."
