People in Bridlington and the East Riding are being told to stick to the rules over the New Year.

A decision is set to be made this week on whether the county will be moving up or down a tier; but residents still will not be able to mix with other households.

Andy Kingdom, Public Health Director for East Yorkshire, said:

"What the virus wants us to do is travel from all different parts to come together in groups in one small room, little ventilation, add alcohol and you've got the perfect mix. Unfortunately that will then cause the spread of the virus which will then lead to the pressures on the hospitals.

"What we need to do is consider all those different steps when we're planning. So do you really need to travel at this time? Could we do it digitally? Could we do it over the phone? That face-to-face contact is where the virus happens. So how do we reduce that? Think outdoors rather than indoors.

"This isn't going to be a normal Christmas unfortunately; but what we can do is have a fantastic Easter. If we get through this, we vaccinate enough people, we keep enough people safe then we can really celebrate when we've got through it, and the weather's better and you've probably saved money and maybe kept a few pounds off as well."
