Bridlington Railway Station to close for nine days for upgrades
It's so Victorian signalling technology can be replaced with a digital panel
Bridlington Train Station will close from tomorrow for nine days for essential repair works.
It will see an upgrade being done to the signalling box, the old mechanical signals will be replaced with modern colour light ones and work will be done to around 1.2km of track.
Lever frames were introduced in the early 1860’s and this type of signalling box is one of the very few that are left in use.
The 65 levers here are being replaced with a modern control panel which is said to improve reliability and reduce disruption on the railway.
Chris Gee, from Network Rail, said:
“It’s time to create a modern railway and replace the existing one with today’s state of the art technology and offer passengers in the area a much more reliable service.
“One of the reasons we’re doing it in nine days is it’s much more efficient and faster than doing it over multiple weekends. We’re doing it over half term so fewer people are disrupted.”
It is still going to cause an inconvenience for some passengers, one said:
“It’s a learning curve for us as I’ve just sold my car and we’re now having to rely on public transport.”
Another added:
“I come from Hunmanby and I use the train a lot but it has to be updated. We’ve had lots of warning from leaflets and the website.”
Bus replacement services will be put on to keep passengers moving between Driffield and Bridlington/Filey/Scarborough during this time.
