It's in a dispute over pay

Bridlington's Post Office could be affected by a strike today.

It is as Communication Workers Union members voted 97-point-3 percent to walk out in a dispute over pay.

There is another strike planned on Thursday.

Richard Titterington, the Yorkshire and the North East representative at CWU, said: "The staff that we're talking about worked throughout the pandemic and in all honesty, it was an awful period and now they're not even being rewarded, they're not getting any pay rise whatsoever and in the present circumstances I think that's awful.

"They've been tireless. They've never once stopped in those years over the pandemic and right up until the current period where we're looking at inflation of around 11 percent.

"The walk-outs will obviously vary from office to office but just to give you some idea, we did get 97.3 percent 'yes' vote for the strike action. It doesn't affect the managers in those offices so some places will have managers in but most of the staff will be walking out though.

"This isn't a dispute of our making. We don't want to taking action and obviously nobody wants to lose money at this time when inflation is so high. Zero percent is zero percent. In real terms it's a wage cut."

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We want to assure our customers that the vast majority of our 11,500 branches are unaffected by the CWU decision to strike on Monday 11 July and will be open throughout the day.

"There are 114 branches, typically in city centres, that are directly managed by Post Office and on previous strike days over a third have opened as usual. We’re disappointed that the CWU have made the decision to strike but remain hopeful that we can reach a pay agreement soon.”
