Bridlington politicians and councillors urged to continue climate change action

It's as COP26 is taking place in Glasgow

It is hoped politicians and councillors in Bridlington will continue taking action in the fight against climate change.

It is as COP26, a big United Nations Climate Change conference, is taking place in Glasgow with world leaders in attendance.

Reverend Oli Preston is the Multiply Minister at Christ Church Bridlington Network and is also part of the Christian Climate Action group.

He explains what he wants to see happen:

"I think the world is waking up that this is an issue, it's not something that we can sort little bit by little bit, but it's an urgent issue. I think people want to see real change and I'd like to see our world leaders actually buckle down and agree to some meaningful change.

"I think it's possible and I think even more ambitious targets, which is what we need to see, are possible and that needs to include things like actually delivering on the financial aid that was promised years ago to developing nations, to allow them to make this transition to this carbon-free economy in a just way.

"We need to make sure that whatever promises our policitians get to, and I'm hoping that they are really ambitious, that we are still talking about it in January, that we're still holding them to it this time next year. We don't just want to see some nice words. Policitians know the right things to say but we've not seen the real action come through."

An eco-summit was held in Bridlington back in September.

Oli added:

"We tried to present what the local things are that we can do because we're not going to affect the energy policy in China, but we can start to work with our local councillors and say 'what are we going to do about the state of housing here in Bridlington? What are we going to do about making it easier for people to not drive but to walk or cycle here in Bridlington?'"
