Bridlington Old Town is set to hold its next big street festival in celebration of The Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

It takes place on Sunday the 5th of June when the street will have dozens of picnic tables for people to use.

There will be various entertainment and food stalls with the resurrection of the great inter-pub Tug of War contest.

Martyn Coltman is group co-chair of ROBOT, which stands for the Regeneration of Bridlington Old Town, and said: "We decided in the Old Town that we wanted to put something on for the whole family. We felt that street food, lots of picnic tables and street entertainment would be the best way to attract people to relax and have a good time throughout the day.

"The bunting has started to appear on the guesthouses, hotels and shops. I do think the town is excited about it particularly when this is the first kind of full summer where there are no interruptions because of Covid. I think people want a normal summer season and this is a really good way to start it and of course everyone loves the Queen and they're really proud of what she's done.

"We used to have an inter-pub Tug of War competition back in the 80s and 90s in some of the festivals we used to do back then. Somewhere along the line it stopped happening but it was really good and it was great fun. There are eight pubs in the Old Town and they've all been invited to put together a team of six. The prize will be two gallons of their favourite ale, it'll be a knockout competition and there'll be a coveted trophy."

What will be happening?

The official opening will be proclaimed by The Mayor at 11am, followed by a short procession down the street and back up to Market Place. 252 Sqn. Drum Band and The Red Admiral Majorettes have kindly agreed to take part, alongside local veterans.

The day’s events then include entertainment from Coastal Voices in the morning; Pantasy Steel Band from Hull in the afternoon; Punch and Judy and juggling from Chris Walton; music from Alex Verda and friends and not one but two big roadshows – Yorkshire Coast BID will have their roadshow trailer at the junction of high street and St. John Street, keeping the crowds informed and entertained, and welcoming visitors from town.

The day’s entertainments will conclude with resurrection of the great Old Town inter-pub Tug ‘O War contest at approximately 4.30pm. Do not miss the pubs taking the strain in an attempt to win two gallons of their favourite ale.

The team at ROBOT will also be providing free Sunday lunch for M.A.S.H. veterans at the main Old Town restaurants and £5 food vouchers for regulars at The Hinge Centre to enjoy some of the tasty treats from the street food stalls.

The team also says some foods must be pre-booked – from Tiffin & Co. for boxed afternoon teas and from The Lamp/Georgian Rooms for boxed picnic lunches. Please see their social media posts or contact them to pre-order.

Anyone else wishing to provide street entertainment is asked to email ROBOT via bridlingtonrobot@gmail.com
