Additional signage in Scarborough to prevent crashes on narrow streets

North Yorkshire County Council has put up additional signage to improve an area of Scarborough to help prevent crashes.
It affects the Old Town particularly Longwestgate, Castlegate and Princess Street as they have narrow lanes.
It is after a woman received serious life-changing injuries back in January this year due to an incident involving a lorry, parked cars and a pedestrian.
Janet Jefferson, County Councillor for Castle Division in Scarborough, said:
"We're getting more and more of these large vehicles coming down these streets which are really not capable of taking them. The driver got to the end of Longwestgate and left his cab actually to investigate I think how he could get round and in doing so, the vehicle moved forward and pinned this local resident against a wall.
"The signs are up on Castle Road, so it covers them shooting down Church Lane, into Paradise, into Castlegate and then they've also gone on to the start of Longwestgate, St. Sepulchre Street and they'll also be going on East Sandgate. This is really just an precautionary and advisory message to please do not use this area, as they may be using sat navs.
"If someone's moving house or they're going to get a large delivery then all they've got to do is advise North Yorkshire County Council, and they'll do a temporary stop on the parking in order for this to take place. We just want everybody to listen and ask their delivery people to use smaller vehicles.
"Believe it or not we already did have a sign up on Castle Road that said 'no heavy vehicles and coaches beyond this point', but whether they just don't read it and think 'oh, well I'll just cut down here and cut the traffic'. Last Christmas we had a big vehicle that was in measurement of about a 40 footer that went down Longwestgate and had to reverse the whole way back.
"Please if you're expecting a delivery, advise them that the roads can't accommodate large vehicles and if it's a three piece suite that they're getting, or something like that, then you've got to really book in advance to that parking can be suspended so that a vehicle can actually turn around. We're not going to stop people having deliveries or even moving house."
