More than 50 new coronavirus cases have been added to Scarborough’s total over the weekend after an “IT error” meant more than 16,000 were not added to figures across the country.

Public Health England said 15,841 cases that had been recorded between 25 September and 2 October were left out of the UK daily case figures.

In order to bring the figures up to date, they were then added to Saturday’s and Sunday’s cases respectively giving daily figures of 12,872 and 22,961 new infections respectively.

The 51 new Scarborough cases, 15 on Saturday and 36 on Sunday, jump the borough’s total since the start of the pandemic to 815, an increase of 86 in the last week.

Before the lost cases were discovered, government data showed that Scarborough’s cases were still trending upwards with a weekly average of 46.9 cases per 100,000.

While new weekly data has not yet been updated the borough’s seven-day rolling average of cases now stands at 10.1, the highest level since May 13.

Today, a mobile testing facility will be in Whitby at the Guisborough Road park and ride site before arriving in Scarborough at the Seamer Road park and ride site on Wednesday.

The testing has been organised by the Department of Health and Social Care which has warned people to not just turn up but make an appointment first.

There are two ways to do this depending on which testing group you are part of.

Anyone who is showing coronavirus symptoms should register for a test on the NHS website at www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/

People who do not have access to the internet, or who have difficulty with the digital portals, can ring the 119 service to book.

Key workers and members of their household should register for a test on the government website.

Tests can be booked at www.gov.uk/apply-coronavirus-test-essential-workers.
