Police are warning people in Scarborough they will enforce Tier 2 restrictions if they have to.

It's as they issued 178 fixed penalty notices last month during the second national lockdown.

Superintendent Mike Walker said:

"Local policing teams worked extremely hard alongside local authority partners including joint patrols, leaflet dropping and even going door-to-door engaging with some of the most affected areas to ensure that those communities were made aware of the situation.

"In some cases, we've had to issue and take enforcement action but what I will say is that the vast majority of the people in Scarborough certainly understood what was required of them and adhered to the regulations.

"In terms of those fixed penalty notices, that's over £35,000 worth of fines issued in the period of approximately a month in the Scarborough area. The vast majority of those were for people who were outside without a reasonable excuse.

"Just a warning to those members of the public who will still try and work in the grey areas, find a way around the restrictions, please don't. We have the enforcement powers and we will absolutely use them if necessary."
