Police have fined 16 people after a house party in Scarborough was raided on Saturday.

The total of the fines handed out to those found in the property totalled £3,200 with a number of children also present who were not punished.

The details of the breach of what was at the time Tier 3 restrictions has been revealed by Superintendent Mike Walker, gold commander for North Yorkshire Police’s response to Covid-19.

Speaking at a meeting of North Yorkshire’s Local Resilience Forum today, Supt Walker said:

“There have been some indoor gatherings and house parties in Scarborough.

“There was one of Christmas Eve and there was one on January 2 where 16 tickets were issued, there was some under 18s there also who didn’t get a ticket, but if you add those 16 up it came to £3,200 in fines.

“We have found a lot of indoor gatherings across the county and in particular over in Scarborough where we have issued most of the tickets.”

Supt Walker said the police would enforce the new regulations when the powers came into law.

He added:

“I would like to remind those members of the public who think they don’t have to follow the rules that you are the ones we are giving the tickets to. We will continue to issue fixed penalty notices.”
