Eleven new coronavirus cases have been recorded in Scarborough in the last 24 hours as the infection sweeps south across the borough.

The new cases bring the borough’s total since the start of the pandemic to 749, an increase in 20 since the weekend as cases continue to rise to record levels nationally.

The spread of the virus, which had been located mainly around Whitby and the north of the borough initially during the second wave now appears to be moving through Scarborough.

A government tracker, which shows areas with more than two cases in the seven days leading up to September 26 shows that Whitby South and East and the Esk Valley wards have now dropped off the list, while Whitby West recorded four cases.

Newby and Scalby recorded five cases, Scarborough Town and North Bay 4, Burniston 4, Barrowcliff and Northstead 4, Ramshill and South Cliff 4, Scarborough Central 4, Falsgrave 3 and Wheatcroft and Cayton 3.

Filey and Hunmanby also recorded 5 cases over the same period.

The borough’s rolling seven-day infection rate now stands at seven new positive tests per day.

The mobile testing facility will be in Scarborough on Sunday at the Seamer Road park and ride site.

The testing has been organised by the Department of Health and Social Care which has warned people to not just turn up but make an appointment first.

There are two ways to do this depending on which testing group you are part of.

Anyone who is showing coronavirus symptoms should register for a test on the NHS website at www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/

People who do not have access to the internet, or who have difficulty with the digital portals, can ring the 119 service to book.

Key workers and members of their household should register for a test on the government website.

Tests can be booked at www.gov.uk/apply-coronavirus-test-essential-workers from 8pm on Saturday.
