Take a look at the spookiest places on the Yorkshire Coast:
Robin Hoods Bay
Old Bert the farmer was such a cheapskate he wore someone's else's old false teeth because he was too tight to buy his own. He lost his head when he was hit by a train. When his body was discovered, he had his teeth in his hand and his head was nowhere to be seen… Many walkers have since reported seeing Old Bert wondering down the railway track looking for his head still holding his false teeth in his hand!
The Grand Hotel, Scarborough
Over the years, guests have reported objects flying across rooms and falling from walls. Doors would shake vigorously and knocking could be heard - but when opened - no one was on the other side. Visitors have seen a lady in a long red dress and heard screaming, singing, laughter and the old-fashioned music of a bygone age.
Whitby Abbey
The home of all things ghoulish and gothic and the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula, of course Whitby and its ghostly goings-on should make our list… St Hilda, the founder of the Abbey, is said to appear among the ruins and a phantom hearse with four headless horses and a headless driver can be seen to race along the cliff before plunging over the edge into the sea.
Scarborough Castle
The headless phantom of Piers Gaveston, the favourite of Edward II, is said to roam the headland at Scarborough Castle. Edward and Gaveston had fled to Scarborough when under attack by Thomas Plantagenet. It is said the ghost lunges at the living, hoping to make them fall from the castle walls.
The Old Chalk Pit near Flamborough
A local girl is said to have ended her life by throwing herself into the pit. You can summon up her spirit if you circle the pit eight times. A hundred years ago, a local farmer plucked up the courage to do just that. The ghostly girl rose up before him and chased him all the way back to Flamborough village.
St Marys Churchyard, Whitby
Alongside Whitby Abbey on the East Cliff is St Mary's Church. "Old Lisa", thought by many to have been a witch, was killed by a horse and carriage. She has been seen wondering the churchyard on the night of the 24th April. For many years the locals would steer clear of the Churchyard on the 24th, fearful of who they may meet…
Burton Agnes Hall
This beautiful 17th century manor house near Bridlington is home to the ghost of Anne Griffith, daughter of Sir Henry Griffith who built the hall. She died after being attacked when out riding. From her deathbed, she made her sisters promise that part of her would always remain in her home. Her skull is believed to be built into the walls of the Great Hall. Attempts to remove it over the years have always brought a curse on the house.
B1249 at the top of Staxton Hill
Real-life wolves were hunted to extinction in these parts in the 15 century. Could ghostly werewolves still stalk the fields? In the 1960s, a lorry driver was terrified when a red-eyed, hairy creature tried to smash its way through his windscreen. As recently as 2016, a young woman described seeing a monster the size of her car which looked like a big dog but with a human face…
