A World War two veteran's been given a surprise honorary degree on his 100th birthday from York St John University.

Norman Gregory, who was in the RAF has been given the award which recognises contributions he's made to the community and country.

The veteran worked towards a Certificate of Education at what was then St John’s College in September 1940, and at the time, the College didn't have the power to grant degrees.

Now, Gregory has become the oldest alumnus to receive an honorary degree.

Vice Chancellor Professor Karen Bryan said:

"It is a pleasure to award Norman with an Honorary Degree on behalf of York St John University. The award recognises the countless young minds that teachers from this era have inspired during their careers, as well as the invaluable contributions Norman has made to his community and country.”
