New project in York to give out school shoes to families in need
There is concern many parents will struggle to afford a new pair
The school holidays might have been only just started, but many North Yorkshire families are already panicking about how they will afford everything they need for the new term.
It is why a new project has been set up in York to upcycle old shoes and trainers to give to those in need.
Krissy Wainwright from Twenty Two Kicks says they are collecting donations of old pairs - and will give them out a pop up shop next month: "Essentially we've just got kitchen bins with our signage on where people can go and go and donate. I go round the drop off points on a Tuesday, collect any donations, bring them back and then what we tend to do is on a weekend we start working on them."
"Some of them might just need a polish, some might need a wipe down, some of them might need a little bit more in terms of restorations, so we try and fill any gaps and cracks and things like that and repaint as well. We try and get them looking to the best they can be."
They will then be given out at a pop up shop on the 19th and 20th of August.
"Parents can come down and they can take anything they want, there is no questions asked, all that we say is please take what you need so we can help as many families as we can."
"When we have the pop up shop, we'll have the black shoes, the black trainers and football boots, anything that you send your child to school in please donate and we'll clean them up as best we can."
