'Live Links' system enhances access to justice following court closure

Witnesses in York and North Yorkshire are now able to give evidence remotely, thanks to the 'Live Links' system that has been introduced following the closure of Northallerton Magistrates Court in 2019.

This technology ensures that local residents retain proper access to justice without needing to travel to distant courthouses.

The 'Live Links' system is particularly beneficial for witnesses of domestic violence and sexual assault, offering reassurance by allowing them to testify from a separate location, avoiding the unsettling prospect of being in the same building as their abuser during legal proceedings.

Jo Coles, Deputy Mayor for Police, Fire and Crime said:

“When Northallerton Magistrates Court was closed in 2019 a live link was promised for local residents who may need to act as witnesses in cases being heard elsewhere. But the process of delivering that link stalled. When I came into post I sought to ensure past promises were delivered and I am delighted the Live Link system is now operational .

David Skaith, the Mayor and I are determined to deliver safe places for all across our region. That includes ensuring that witnesses to serious crimes are properly protected and supported.”

The Witness Service provides free, independent support to both defence and prosecution witnesses in every criminal court in England and Wales, helping people feel informed, supported and more confident, so they can give their best evidence.

Nicola Waite, Team Leader at the Witness Service, said:

“The Witness Service exists to help witnesses feel more confident when giving evidence in a criminal trial, and to make the court process feel less daunting.

“So we wholeheartedly support measures which allow witnesses to give evidence remotely, ensuring they feel as safe and comfortable as possible.

“Importantly, the Witness Service will still be there to explain, listen and answer questions, offering emotional and practical support every step of the way.”
