A York man says his heart is breaking for the Ukrainian children he's helping escape to safety.

24-year-old Edward Matthews is volunteering at a train station in Poland close to the Ukrainian border.

He's giving out things like teddy bears and colouring books to the families fleeing the war.

He had originally travelled to the Country to work as a photographer but says seeing people in a desperate situation made him want to volunteer.

He says "Just knowing that these children had possibly seen their houses or their friends houses being bombed absolutely breaks my heart. I can't put into words how it feels."

Edward will travel back to the UK at the end of the week but says he intends to travel back to Poland as soon as possible to do some more volunteer work.
