Anger at public meeting over growing number of holiday lets in York
Some say "party houses" are making life a misery
People living in York say the number of so called "party houses" available for rent in City is making life a misery.
A meeting has been held about the impact short term holiday lets are having.
It was organised by York Central MP Rachel Maskell.
78 year old David Dudley was so fed up he ended up moving : "There was parties, parking everywhere, dustbins left all over the place, rubbish left all over the place, half eaten meals thrown about, shouting on the river bank." But he tells us that the stress caused two strokes: "One I was completely paralysed and not so long since I've had one where just my hand was paralysed and you just feel so powerless. They say an English man homes is his castle, all your want is a peaceful life and just to get on with your neighbours."
But some landlords argue they've been given a bad name. Yvonne Patterson has just one holiday let: "I pay all my taxes, I make sure I've got all my electrical certificates. my landlord certificate, smoke detectors, heat detectors, extinguishes. I try to run the business properly."
She's worried that costs will increase if changes to the law are brought in.
But she says she understands some landlords aren't responsible: "There is these party houses with ridiculous amounts of beds put in and that needs to stop, because it's giving people like myself an awful bad name."
The Government is currently running a consultation to find out more about the impact of short term holiday accommodation. It runs until the 7th June. You can take part here
